Top 5 Dos and Donts for your 4th of July!

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
      1) DO ENJOY KATY PERRY'S "FIREWORK" DURING THE DISPLAY.   First of all, it's a great song. It's catchy-it's poppy--it screams summer---and it has a good message. So unless you are partying with an exhausting music snob who will look down at you and explain why they think a deep cut from The Velvet Underground would have been a better choice--turn up that volume, ignite the light and own the night like it's the 4th of July. Cause it is MothaFuckas!   2) DON'T USE A LOT OF KETCHUP   This one comes from my own experience. The 4th is usually a balmy summer night. There is a usually a party to attend. If you are a…

The Vegas Vanity Lesson

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
It was Saturday night. The big night. I was with 12 girls attending my best friend and her partner's bachelorette weekend in Vegas. We were all dressed up in our sluttiest and most glitterful outfits. The heels were too high and the make up was too thick and it was perfect. I understood we were quite a scene. 12 gorgeous girls walking in a group, filled with confidence and several Tito’s vodka shots. Men were staring. Women were staring. Even lonely Black Jack dealers were staring. And then at one point---just as we were about to walk into our restaurant. I started hearing it. Applause. I was in the back of the group since I walk like a…

GIVING UP

Tory Shulman News
Have you guys ever thought about giving up? Like on the whole dream? I have. I am thinking about it right now. (Pause for dramatic effect). No in all seriousness, I am marinating the idea in my head. The main reason boils down to one thing: success.  I was raised to be successful and to move forward in my career. I worked extremely hard in high school and college so that I could be prepared. But for what? I’m doing literally nothing. Like the opposite of something. I know that an artist’s career is more of an up-and-down graph than a linear line. I know that there isn’t a straight forward way to make it in this business. But I’m…

Top Ten Things NOT to do at an Audition

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
      1)  First off, DO NOT BE A BITCH in the audition room. I cannot be more clear about this. There is nothing worse than an audition waiting room in terms of silent vibes so MAKE SURE YOURS ARE NICE AND GENEROUS. Everybody in that room is fighting an uphill battle-so lend a hand and let them know if there is a surprise twist in the audition. Be a pal--don’t be a BITCH. My new bumper sticker. 2)  Don’t wear a ton of perfume. Everyone hates that ESPECIALLY casting directors. 3)  Don’t seem desperate. Like, you know how you were with that senior guy in high school you were dating as a freshman? Yeah, don’t be like that.…

THE ALMOSTS

Tory Shulman News
THE "ALMOSTS" BY TORY SHULMAN ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED @LINEBUDDIES.COM Pilot season is rough for everyone involved. It’s a lot of “almosts” for everyone. Every time you succeed, there is a new hurdle for you to pass through--like 15 tests for network, producers, the studio and the unicyclist. How do you deal with the “almosts?” How do you deal with the “getting so close?” I actually don’t have the answer, I’m just asking. If I had to give advice on this, I would say that going Buddhist is the best thing you can do when you are dealt this frustrating hand. In Buddhism, you train every day for the rest of your life in letting everything go. Groundlessness becomes your motto and…

Top Ten Things To Know Before Taking Your Headshot

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , , , , ,
TOP TEN THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TAKING YOUR HEADSHOT! BY TORY SHULMAN ORIGINALLY POSTED @ LINEBUDDIES.COM 1) Obviously if you want a smiling shot, make sure it is a REAL smile. If you lips are shut too tight, you look like a murderer holding in a secret. If your mouth is open too wide, you end up looking like psych patient trying to hold in all the pain. ***Helpful hint: Have your photographer say dirty words right before he shoots. Some of my favorites are: boobies, scrotum and taint. These always get a good smile. 2) Get your hair and makeup done PROFESSIONALLY. Unless you are a stylist for a living, pay the 100 dollars and get someone to…

The Road

Tory Shulman News
It was all the way in Burbank. I had an audition for "After Lately" and I begged my boyfriend to drive me. I wasn't greedy though. I let him browse Freak Beat record shop afterwards while I bought cheap L'oreal gel eyeliner at the CVS 1 mile down the road. Which is AMAZING by the way. The BF drove me on to the lot and was ready to drive up and park the car near the casting trailer. However, Mr. Tight-Ass Universal-Guard-Man refused to let him drive past the gate. Thus I had to walk my NEWLY exercising ass down to the trailers. And guess what? It wasn't a short walk and I was in heels. And yes,…

Les Mis–Oui ou Non?

Tory Shulman News
I want to preface this review by saying that I am a die-hard, life-long Les Miserables fan. I've seen the play six times in three different countries and I was one of those disastrously annoying teenagers who blasted the cassette soundtrack 24/7. I know all the words to every song as does my entire family. It's been our favorite musical for about 20 years so I was more than excited for this movie to blow my mind.   I was not blown.  That came out wrong. I was disappointed. Majorly. Let's start with the pros. The PROS 1) Anne Hathaway. Man, I thought I hated you. I thought you were SO annoying and SO blah and disgustingly righteous about…

The Secret-Sauce to Survival

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
As most of you know, I'm not a the adventuresome sort. In fact, I am a bit of a homebody. Or as my friends and family sometimes call me--a sad, sad, reclusive hermit. However, I do enjoy the idea of adventure and I find myself absorbing any kind of extreme survival stories, books, TV shows or documentaries I can get my hands on. My latest read was a terrific book called "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why" by Laurence Gonzalez. I highly recommend it. Gonzalez takes you through a myriad of AMAZING survival stories and explains why certain people live and certain people die.  Turns out, it has nothing to do with age or gender or…

9 Tattoos I Dig and Why

Tory Shulman News , , , , , , ,
Since I began training in Buddhism, I've wanted to get this tattoo. Well, actually it's two tattoos. I've wanted the word "Slow" written on one foot and the word "Down" written on the other. Every time I looked at my feet, I would be reminded of this valuable lesson. Ya see, I tend to move fast--like Star Trek Warp Speed fast and moving too fast has caused me to make many mistakes. I believe wholeheartedly in the adage: "There is more to life than increasing it's speed." I haven't gotten the tat since I think my mom and boyfriend would kill me and I am chicken shit and think it would hurt like hell on the feet. But, in…
